Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) is a highly-effective, evidence-based, motivational program that impacts families in multiple areas of their lives, including self-care, pleasurable activities, problem-solving, and goal setting. At the same time, CRAFT addresses their loved one's resistance to change. CRAFT uses scientifically validated behavioral principles to reduce the loved one's substance misuse and to encourage him or her to seek treatment. CRAFT taches families behavioral and motivational strategies for interacting with their loved one. Clinical trials on CRAFT have shown that when family members use these positive, supportive, non-confrontational techniques, not only do they find ways to get their loved one into treatment, but the family members themselves feel better. Clinical trials also have shown that family members benefit emotionally even if their loved one does not enter treatment.
