Loved Ones Support Team (LOST)

Loved Ones Support Team (LOST) is a Family Support Group for family members and friends concerned about their loved ones living with a substance use disorder. This program is based on the Community Reinforcement and Family Training (CRAFT) model. The model is a highly effective, evidence-based, motivational program that impacts families in multiple areas of their lives, including self-care, pleasurable activities, problem-solving, and goal setting. At the same time, the LOST group addresses their loved one's resistance to change. LOST uses scientifically validated behavioral principles to reduce the loved one's substance misuse and to encourage him or her to seek treatment. LOST teaches families behavioral and motivational strategies for interacting with their loved one. Clinical trials on this model have shown that when family members use these positive, supportive, non-confrontational techniques, not only do they find ways to get their loved one into treatment, but the family members themselves feel better. Clinical trials also have shown that family members benefit emotionally even if their loved one does not enter treatment.

Major Goals:

  1. Reduce your loved one's harmful substance misuse
  2. Engage your loved one into treatment
  3. Improve your and your family's functioning (emotional, physical, relationships)
